February 2013, San Francisco, CA
Our sweet Sugar was diagnosed with feline mammary cancer in January 2013. After this happened and I told people that my cat had breast cancer, I realized that a lot of people (many of them pet owners) do not know that animals get mammary cancer. So Sugar and I started Sugar Rub! to raise awareness and encourage owners to do regular breast exams (a Sugar Rub!) on their pets.
Sugar has had a unilateral mastectomy, two lumpectomies and just finished five rounds of chemo. Through her Facebook page and website she has raised awareness and now people all over the world know about mammary cancer in animals and they are checking their pets regularly.
Because of Sugar, people whose cats have mammary cancer are reaching out to me. I have had several people contact me because they are now going through this and I am in daily contact with them as they travel this hard road. Some days it feels like I am virtually holding their hands.
Sugar means everything to me. I nursed her through two surgeries and saw her through five chemo treatments. As sad as it has been, our bond has grown and is so intense and strong. This picture of her wearing her pink ribbon breast cancer collar was taken in early February after her first surgery to remove her lump and chain of mammary glands. She still has her blue e-collar on and when I look at this picture I see our brave warrior fighting the hard fight. Throughout all of it she has remained her same sweet and loving self, living up to her name every day.
Sugar is an inspiration to all who know her.
